What makes a Happy Home? I love to take care of my family. For me, creating a home that is warm and inviting, where everyone feels welcome is pure joy! The smell of fresh laundry just in off the clothesline, a neat and tidy home and garden, a good home cooked meal, a few desserts here and there, the love of family, friends and fellowship all help to make our home a Happy Home. Join me as we celebrate the holidays, the birthdays and the every days!

Missing the laughter

The house seems too quiet this week. Last week seemed like one constant party here at The Old Parsonage. Our Texans (on the left) flew out at 5:30pm on New Year's Eve (Flyboy and LBB on the right). Mr OP and I dropped them off at the airport then did another quick trip to the market - the fridge was pretty bare by the time everyone left on Saturday. We opted for Chinese for supper that night - I was a little too pooped to cook.

But I wouldn't have had the week any other way. It was perfect! New Year's day was spent on the couch watching old movies with Mr OP. I caught up on the laundry and slow roasted pork and sauerkraut in the oven for supper. Eating pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Day is a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition said to bring good luck.

Do you have any traditions that you do for New Year's to bring good luck?

I know you miss them but what sweet, sweet memories you do make when you are together. Your beautiful family is growing. Who knows? There may be little ones running around next year. =]

Enjoy Chinese, but have to go where I can get it cooked without msg.
Looking forward to a great 2012!

Well, we have to have black-eyed peas, of course! LOL Black-eyed peas, rice, collard greens, + some pork (hog jowl, traditionally, whatever that is!) We usually have ham :)Many other items might be included, but those pretty standard. Of course, this is not strictly a "Southern" area, with so many people who've moved here from elsewhere, but that's the traditional New Year's Day menu.
Fun to compare regional differences!
So glad you had fun with your family!

Hi Leann....

So happy your holiday was filled with blessings.

No, I don't have any good luck traditions. I do, however, make a list of goals I want to accomplish for the year.

Take care and have a good Thursday! Susan

Oh it really must seem quiet after all the kids have gone, yet good to be with Mr. OP enjoying some quiet times. I know that lots of memories were made!

We don't have any New Year's Day traditions, though I have heard of yours!

No traditions here. By New Year's, we're holding the couch down as well and just trying to get our acts together so we can head back to work.

The quite after all of the festivities is a big change. Then the clean-up :) Oh wow! I am catching up too. So nice to see those wonderful family photos at your home!

I know what you mean about it being too quiet now! When we spent Christmas at my son's house, there were so many people around and all you heard was talking and laughter. Once I got home, it was too eerily silent!!

I don't have any traditions for New Year's Day where cooking a special meal is concerned. It's usually just a day to veg out and watch movies:-) If we're hungry we just snack on whatever is left in the fridge! lol xoxo

Lovely pics. Lovely family. Lovely memories.

Nope, we don't do anything, for New Years luck. :-)

That is the finest of suppers, I think;
When I'm grown up and can have what I please
I think I shall always insist upon these."

Happy New Yeasr Leann!

I had thought I had already wished you one, and I didn't. My dear mother-in-love passed away 2 days after Christmas and I am still not thinking clearly. Glad you had such a nice visit with your family over Christmas. Your future daughters in law are lovely. Love the picture of you all. I had pictured you with dark hair, I don't know why. lol Their rings are gorgeous, perfect for each.
Things are settling down here too. We tried to make the best of Christmas. Looking forward to 2012
Wishing you and your family a happy, healthy, and fun New Year!

Hugs,
Debbie

What lovely faces. We feel much the same when ours part. NY traditions -- not a lot. Usually a quiet evening with friends on NYEve. And some cleaning. often clean on NYDay!
