Knob and tube?

Yes we still have knob and tube wiring here at The Old Parsonage. It's the original wiring and this Sears kit house was built in 1916.

We have an electrician coming today to give us an estimate on having the house re-wired. It would be wonderful to not have to unplug the toaster when the coffee maker is on. Or, to be able to run a hair dryer in the bathroom while the a/c is on in our bedroom.

We were told awhile ago that knob and tube wiring is very safe. But I'm ready for an upgrade, plus having a few extra outlets and some additional outside lighting would be wonderful.

This old girl will be 100 years old in just 3 years and I love her - every nook and cranny. The windows are original too - wavy glass and all. When I clean them I think back to all the women who might have cleaned them. Remember that this is an old parsonage, so a lot of people have lived here. Plus, the women of the church who got the parsonage ready for the new families cleaned them too

Our home has soo much character, but like all older homes she has her quirks, like the electricity, water in the cellar, windows that need to be propped open with a stick because the weights have fallen into the walls and no central air conditioning.

I wouldn't trade her for a brand new house, but if I won the lottery I would make some upgrades.

As you can see I've been busy in my studio this week making handmade Valentine's Day cards. I've got a few more to make plus I need 3 birthday cards this month too.

Does anyone else out there still have knob and tube wiring in your homes or do you remember having it?

I hope that you are enjoying you weekend!

I hope you get your electricity figured out. Even in our newer house two hairdryers in the house can't go at the same time.

Oh, Leann, I'm so behind with blogging but have to tell you how much I love your Valentine cards! So pretty!!! Lots of ideas there - hmmm!
As for old houses, we live in a log "cabin" that's been added on to several times so it has some of everything, but I've never heard of knob & tube wiring. I thought the outlets with only 2 holes were pretty old-haha! The log cabin part was built in the late 1920s as a hunting lodge so not as old as your house, but we do have some of those windows with the metal weights.
Happy Groundhog's Day! xoxo Jane

I doubt we have that wiring, since our house is less than 50 years old.

LOVE it, that you are lucky enough to live in a really old house. And that you appreciate it.

So lovely... The thought of all the women who have cleaned those windows, before you. Wonder if their imprint remains, in some way? A bit of an aura or some such? Nice 'wondering.' :-)

Your valentines are lovely. As I was reading about your wiring issues and looking at your images I thought, "Doesn't matter. You fix it -- and you fix it because you LOVE that valentine of a house, so filled with love!" Happy February!

All of your cards are gorgeous, you have been quite productive! I hope it does not make too big of a hole in your piggy bank to upgrade the parsonage. ~Diane

Upgrading your electrical should lower your homeowners insurance cost. Some insurance companies won't even do business if the house has knob and tube service.

Leann,
I've had knob and tube...in my first house, and this one. We did rewire this house, though, and I'm glad we did.
Great cards.
I do love the wavy windows too, and don't mind propping them up with a stick!
